La obra propone la interpretación de la imagen desde la tradición filosófica hasta la actualidad para responder a la pregunta ¿qué es una imagen? Se destaca la concepción dialéctica de la imagen en contraste con las interpretaciones esquemática (Kant), fenomenológica (Husserl) y hermenéutica (Gadamer), y, su actualidad (Gottfried Boehm). Trata de confrontar estas imterpretaciones con base en la exposición platónica de la imagen en el Sofista, específicamente en la esencial distinción entre la imagen icónica y la imagen fantasmal.
